rusty fine sand which usually grades into a yellow fine sand at about 18 or 20 inches below the surface. This yellow fine sand may extend to a depth of 3 feet or more, though a number of places were found where the brownish or rusty color extended to the depth of the auger. Throughout the soil section there is a very small amo
...unt of silt or clay which is sufficient to make the soil stick together when wet. In a few places a small amount of gravel was found scattered through the soil and in the deep subsoil.
Gravel beds, however, were not found. In a few instances a very compact layer of reddish fine sand was found at a depth of about 8 inches which seemed to be cemeted together by a fer- riferous material. This condition, however, seemed to be of very limited extent. In such places the surface was usually a whit- ish or gray fine sand and the drainage was much more defective than usual.
