Durhig this period occurred some of the most im- portant and bloody battles of the war, amongst which were Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, tlie succession of fights from the Wilderness to Petersburg, and subse- quently the victories of Opequan and Fisher's Hill, in the Valley of Virginia, besides many minor engagements in which tliore was much hard fighting.
