If ' the Law' be nothing more than a dialect, so to speak, of ancient religious language, it is interesting to the student of comparative religion, and that is all ; but if it represents a stage in divine economy, — if, that is, it is what it professes to be, — then we may see in it a very definite stage in the development of the plan of God for the human race with reference to Himself. ' The Law, ' Judaism, whatever we may like to call it, repre- sents a pale, a religious precinct, within whic...h certain representatives of the human race were collected, where they might draw near to God, listen to Him, receive His approaches, and form the point of contact, as it were, the place in human nature, where God would alight when He came in the Incarnation, in the body prepared for Him. So we find in Judaism in no sense a catholic religion, but a religion of privilege, a receptacle in the first place for the Divine message. ' Thus saith the Lord, ' the Lord speaking by the prophets : ' Hear now the word of the Lord, ' — these were proclamations which made Judaism to the human race, in a real and true sense, that which the oracle of Delphi was to the false religions of the world.
