At first, he followed the studies of two Brahmanic teachers, but their instruction gave him no satisfaction. After two years, he left them and began an independent life as a penitent; thereupon, five other penitents joined with him. During five years, he lived a life of strict asceticism and went so far in self-castigation that he was close on to death. Then he recognized that this, too, was not the right way ; he gave up the life of asceticism, he ate and drank again like other human beings and his former comrades and disciples looked upon him as a renegade and deserted him.
