Amongst the friends and correspondents of Dr. Garden, was Linneus, the greatest botanist of his age, and who has immortalized his name in that of the "(?arrftViia," one of the most beautiful and fragrant shrubs in the world. It may not be uninteresting here to state, that a native of Charleston was the first American who ever ob- tained a degree in medicine abroad, and that was William Bull, (son of the late Lieutenant Governor, and afterwards himself Lieutenant Governor,) who had been a pupil of the great BoerhaVe, at Ley- den.
