This event took place eight or nine years before the lecturer was born, but it subse- quently left an impression on his memory, never to be effaced. They were from the town of Forres, which stands on the Findhorn, in the north- eastern shire of Maury. They had relinquished many fond endearments at home, in seeking their fortunes in a distant land. They had left tho noble Loch Spinie, with its swans ; the bridge of the Findhorn ; the moor of Forres, immortalized by the genius 6f Shakspeare ; the... dilapidated cathedral of Elgin ; the trout and salmon of contiguous streams; the tra- ditions connected with the Castle of Inverness ; their parish kirk ; the stone manse of their pastor, — and many other objects too numerous to be mentioned. After them came the Rev. William Allen, who had been edu- cated at Marischal College, at Aberdeen, the northern capital of Scotland. He was a man of some peculiarities, but they were harmless. He taught for years in our town. Never was a pupil so proud as he of a preceptor.
