Authentic anecdotes of revolutionary days are sought otrt with such earnestness that we are induced to state all that have fallen in our way. Previous to the battle, a woman, meanly attired, called at the residence of Joseph Shallcross, requesting a private interview with the host. On entering the room, she presented Mr. Shallcross with a letter from Gen. Washington, wishing to obtain information of the enemy. The letter was quilted in her petticoat, and an answer was returned in the same way.
...This gentleman was a member of Friends' society, and so deeply interested in the cause of independence, and in ener- getic efforts to attain it, that it was ofttimes said he only omitted to shoulder the musket.
The following story was related by the lady to many of her friends. Two officers, one a captain in the regular army, the other of the militia, on the night the town was taken, lodged at the house of their mother-in-law, Mrs. Hansons, north-weet corner of Shipley and Hanover Sts. Mrs. Hanson was a widow with two single daughters ; one of them was very handsome, and quite a belle.
