Mr. Foster W. Stearns was appointed by Governor McCall to succeed Mr. Belden on Feb. 14, 1917, on the recommenda- tion of the trustees. Mr. Stearns began his duties on March 16, 1917. He devoted himself at once to mastering all the details of the work, in addition to gaining an understanding of the general plan on which the library has been conducted.
This requires an amount of patience and energy which is hard for a layman to estimate, but the knowledge thus ac- quired is an invaluable asset in the administration of a large library.
