Hence it is evident, that of the 5,866 children born in Boston in 1856, only 1,670 were the oflFspring of American fathers; and of these, only 902 were of Massachusetts fathers, and but 428 of these last were the children of native Bostonians. Other figures in the Registrar's report show, that in 1,427 instances only both parents were Americans, making about 24.09 per
... cent, of all the births in the city, — a decrease from the record of the previous year. In 259 cases, comprising 4.37 per cent, of the births, the fathers only were native born ; and in 223, or 3.76 per cent., the mothers only were American born. In 2,881 instances, being 48.64 per cent., both parents wore Irish.
The number of children born in each of the twelve wards, witli their ratio to the population, as stated in the last city census, which does not agree in all respects, with that taken by the State in June, 1855, is thus given by Nicholas A.
