It is only by obtaining ready access to the Railway by means of shortbranches or tramroads from those mines and works, that the benefitscontemplated from the introduction of Railway communication can be fullyrealized. But if this is to be the case, and if any considerable portionof this immense local traffic is to pass by Railway, it is manifest thatthe rails so used could not be rendered available without extreme dangerand inconvenience for the general traffic. Even the export trade alonein co...als and iron could not be conducted with convenience upon the sameline of rails as the passenger traffic, and would require a separate lineof rails in order to allow the waggons passing and repassing from thedifferent works within the district to reach without interruption someprincipal station at its extremity, where trains of the proper size couldbe formed and dispatched to distant points. This object would be veryimperfectly fulfilled by the plan proposed by the wide-gauge Railway, oflaying down an extra rail, or pair of rails, on the narrow gauge, insidethe principal rails, which would, in fact, obviate none of the objectionsto the accumulation of slow mineral trains upon the main passenger line, and would allow of no access by lateral tramroads, without cutting up themain line by crossings.
