A small force of Cubans, however, under General Demetrio Castillo, pushed forward and attacked the Span- ish rear guard near Las Guasimas, about three miles from Siboney. The Cubans were rather roughly handled and lost a number of men wounded, one of them mortally. At 9:20 a. M. , the village being completely occupied, and the different brigades of Lawton's division being assigned to their respective positions, the cap- ture of the place was reported to General Shaf- ter. Several hours later Ge...neral Wheeler ar- rived at Siboney. In the course of the afternoon he held a conference with General Young, Col- onel Wood and General Castillo, at Castillo's house in the village, and made a reconnaissance of the Spanish position at Las Guasimas. I knew personally of the conference and the recon- naissance, and I notified General Lawton that 52 THE SANTIAGO CAMPAIGN.
I believed preparations were being made for an attack by a portion of the Cavalry Division upon the Spanish position. He endeavored to com- municate with General Shafter in regard to the matter, but the Segttranca was standing a num- ber of miles out from the shore, there was a high sea running, and he was unable to establish com- munication with the vessel.
