15, 1820. On Oct. 3, 1800, he married Alice Pepper, who was born March 10, 1781, daughter of Joseph and Zylpha Pepper, and died Feb. 17, 1820. Their children were: Thomas; Capt. John P. ; Henry (lost It at sea), who married Betsey; Mehitable, who married Elkanah Pame; Harriet, who married Eben Chapman; and Hannah, who married Joseph Cummings.
(\ II) Thomas Knowles, son of Thomas and Alice (Pepper), was born Dec. 31, 1803, in the town of Eastham, Mass. , and in early life settled at New Bedford,
... perhaps, being for a time at Nantucket. He became engaged in the whale fishery industry, establishing the well known house wliich long bore his name, and prosecuted it with that great etfort, care and industry that proved the means of his accumulating great wealth.
Besides being a successful and prominent business man Mr. Knowles was distinguished in the community for liis clearness of thought and liis independence of expression in all matters in which he felt an interest. While conducting his business with great energy and ability, he was at the same time in sympathy with all move- ments for the promotion of the moral and intel- lectual welfare of his fellow citizens.
