September 16th the army advanced to Culpepper where it remained in camp till October loth, when the Fith Corps moved to Raccoon Ford on the Riipidan, out finding no enemy returned to camp at night. Tlie next day tlie enemy having threatened our right flank, the army began to fall back to preserve its line of communication. That night we camped at Beverly Ford. In the morning we retraced our steps, crossed the river, advanced nearly to Brandy Station and bivouached for the night.
