We marched along the road due west by the side of the sea into the seaside town of Blankenberghe. The inhabitants cheered us and could not do enough for us. JThe men were plied with chocolates, cake and beer whenever we halted for a moment, which we did frequently, as the Colonels had not received orders where to go. We finally bivouacked just outside the town beside the sea. It was cold and damp and I had to get up several times to walk about to get warm.
