These characteristics, which render them far from popular, especially with the Anglo-Saxon ele- ment, are sure to make them formidable in war. Every man is a soldier if physically able to be one. Every Swiss takes a deep interest in the army and appears to be imbued with the highest form of patriotism. Their military work in peace time or in war time is the same thorough, plodding, earnest, work which makes for effi- ciency. Their military seems to take no rest, as though the country were always in imminent danger.
