But the Commons had now committed themselves, and were obliged to get their petitions made law. The defection of Went- worth was most important, it deprived the nation of a vigorous leader and gave Charles a most valuable adviser and agent. To many it was a great surprise; but both general and personal influences had for some time been working for this end. It was a time of political discussion. The relative position of Parliament and king was much in debate, and on this point Wentworth and the patriot leaders totally disagreed.
