To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

The germs of black spot are in the foliage. The disease is carried by the fallen leaves to the soil, where it lies dormant throughout autumn and winter, ready to attack the plants next spring. Therefore look well after the leaves; all infected foliage on the plant should at once be removed and burnt, together with all fallen leaves.
In addition to foliage, the wood should receive atten- tion. Where a plant in the summer has shown signs of black spot, the wood, especially the young growth, shoul
...d be drenched with sulphate of copper in the winter when the plant is completely at rest. The surface soil of a bed of roses infected with black spot should be skimmed off in the autumn to the depth of an inch or two. This done, give the bed a very slight dressing of sulphate of iron and then fill up with fresh soil.
Summer spray : half an ounce of sulphite of potas- sium to two gallons of water.
Winter spray : one ounce of sulphate of copper to two gallons of water.
ROSE RUST (Uredo rosce) These uredines or rusts of different kinds are partial to the rose family.
