Nor had such any reason- able excuse for being ignorant of St. Patrick's Purgatory ; apart altogether from the fact that there was a literary connecti...on between that spot and Florence in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries it is well known that the Italian merchants employed maps of Ireland, called portolans, to aid them in their travels, and on many of these the cartographers had marked in the purgatory more or less accurately. 3 So Antonio's story fits perfectly into the known commercial conditions of Ireland in the fifteenth century. We may now permit him to give the account of his experiences.
