When steam is not being used there is little circula tion of water in the boiler and water entering the boiler at about 150 degrees temperature is heavier than the water in the boiler. As the colder water will go to the bottom, the temperature will be reduced in that part of the boiler, and cause the flues to con- tract in length as well as in diameter. This will have a tendency to pull them out of the sheet, thereby loosening tliem. After the fire has been knocked this tendency is much greater...; hence, cold water should never be put into the boiler after the fire is knocked out. The boiler should always be filled before the fire is knocked out.

A. 66. It is. Careful experiments have shown that a loco- motive boiler will generate one per cent more steam for every eleven degrees that the tank water is heated. Thus heating the water in the tank from 39 to 94 degrees would effect a saving of five per cent.
