A state of knowing, or of feel- ing, includes, as its condition or complement, this notion of consciousness, thus revealing it as the regu- lative idea of the department. The above discussion may seem to you remote and abstruse, but it is of the last degree of importance. If its conclusions are correct, not only are all present identifications of mental and physical phenomena shown to be false, the very effort to make them is disclosed as intrinsi- cally absurd, as much so as to resolve colors into odors.
