It was a solemn and mournful feeling, and when I looked for the first time on our forefathers, and thought on their more ancient progenitors, who were sovereign Princes of the Isles, entering into treaties with the monarchs of England, making war on the kings of Scotland, and intermarrying with their families, I could not but remember the pa- thetic language of Ossian, " Where are our fathers, O chiefs of the times of old ?
