Even if it had been the end of an exhausting afternoon—an unemployed woman who addressed every other comment to the toddler on her lap as though it was a ventriloquist’s doll, a man who analysed aloud everything Kathy said, a fiftyish fellow who refused to tell her his exact age, which he appeared to resent as much as not being instantly matched with a job—how could she have avoided trouble by failing to defend her own son?
