Veientibus arvis] Vei, the modern Isola Farnese, was an Etruscan city on the river Cremera, about 12 miles from Rome. Its territory at this time extended probably up, or nearly so, to the right bank of the Tiber.
3. Domus] 'family. ' By 'one family undertaking the burden and forces of the city, ' Ovid means t...hat the Fabii had determined to bear alone the brunt of the war with the Veientines. They were led out by Kaeso Fabius in his third Consulship, B. C. 479. A main reason for their thus leaving the city seems to have been the dangerous position of Kaeso, who though a patrician had taken part with the plebs.
4. Gentiles] ' all of one gens. ' professa] ' volunteered, ' be- cause the offer to carry on the Veientine war was freely made to the Senate : professus, participle passive of deponent verb profiteer.
