Limitations of the Study The limitations of this study are presented in terms of two aspects, the scope of the study and methodology. More fundamental limi- tations concerning problems in the etiology and definition of alcoholism and the alcoholic are discussed in the "Survey of the Problem" section of this proposal . 38 In determining the scope of this study, the researcher decided to investigate alcoholism by assuming a general point of view and pre- senting these assumptions in a theoretical... framework. In this frame- work, the researcher asserts that alcoholism is a complex process, al- ternating between abstinence and indulgence, and that a part of this process concerns the relationship between alcohol and the self-concept of the alcoholic. The researcher does not seek to solve the problem of what factor or factors cause alcoholism or establish that abstinence is a solution to this condition. The intent of the researcher is heuristic in that by probing a conception, facts may emerge that generate more specific directions for future research.
