The laws of every community should favor this ; and our laws do. But to favor it, is the extent of their capacity. No law can force it, or maintain it, in any other way than by putting every man, as far as possible, in a condition to take care of himself. And it can do this in no other way than by removing obstructions, and giving him a clear field. Then, under God, all depends upon himself — to sink or swim.
Where all are removed from a state of poverty, there can be no very great concentratio...n of wealth. But it is the desire and hope of every one to escape the evils of destitution and depend- ence — to have something that he can call his own. Having it, he is more of a man among men, for it. The possession has an influence upon his own spirit — removes slavish and shrink- ing feelings, and enables him to show out what ho is in a way that, oppressed with poverty, he could never have the face to do. You have perhaps heard of the English preacher who was accustomed to borrow a guinea every Saturday night, and re- turn it Monday morning, on the ground that he could face his congregation better with money in his pocket.
