This degree of labor and toil, as it was originally impos- ed upon Adam, and is still continued upon his posterity, is a curse,... a proper punishment for his sin. This is evident from the form of its first denunciation, " Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it j cursed is the ground for thy sake — in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread j" that is, because thou hast sinned, therefore, cursed is the STATE OF MAN COMPARED. 303 ground for thy sake ; and, therefore^ thou shalt provide thyself bread with sweating labor.
