For the sorrow had come before, when my father and my mother left me, one by one, and I was beginning to learn I was to live upon my own responsibilities. It is since then that I have looked back with sorrow upon my early home, and with regret. For though we lived so poorly, as some would think it, yet we lived comfortably.
