...he Justices divided out the Riding amongst themselves, and arranged to hold monthly meetings of the churchwardens, overseers and constables in each division. During the Commonwealth this custom fell into disuse. In 1661 it was re-established by an order of the court which declared that by former experience it hath been found that the diligent observance of the monthly meetings of the Justices in their several divisions have prevented many disorders 2 .
After 1662, however, the Justices seem to have had in- creasing difficulty in getting their orders performed.
