Pierre, and the next year, having crossed Minnittie, or Lake of the Woods, they established Fort St. Ch;>rles on its south- western bank. Five leagues from Lake Winnipeg they estab- lished a post on the Assiniboine.*^ The river Winnipeg, called by them Maurepas, in honor of the minister of France in 1734, was protected by a fort of the same name.
