We ought, indeed, to have paused before we first adopted the diluvian theory, and referred all our old super- ficial gravel to the action of the Mosaic flood : for of man, and the works of his hands, we have not found a single trace among the remnants of a former world entombed in these ancient deposits.' " Some cling to the literal account of the flood, because they find traditions among many anqient nations of such a calamity having happened.
