When they were out of sight, all around us was still and quiet, save the chilling winds, howling through the almost impenetrable forests. We breakfasted on bread baked in the ashes, without salt or saleratus ; we gnawed at a bone, from which the meat had disappeared a day or two previously ; and drank tea made of spruce twigs.
Although disappointed in our anticipations, although we endured almost incredible hardships, still we were con- tent; we risked our lives and comfort to be sure, but we started to California to better our fortunes, and in pursuit of the same object, we started on this expedition with the hope of accumulating " our pile'* in little " less than no time." After our meagre breakfast we started on our return to Nevada.
