Ofthe Whigs, Lieutenant Elliott was killed, and Captain Petit, who hadbeen sent in advance by Major Davie to examine the lane, the ford ofthe creek and the houses, and failing to do so, as carefully as wasproper, paid the penalty of neglect of duty by being wounded with twoof his men. " Rocky Mount is on the west bank of the Wateree River (as the Catawbais called after its junction with Wateree Creek), thirty miles fromCamden, and was garrisoned by Colonel Turnbull with one hundred andfifty New York volunteers and some militia.
