The public is likely to be most directly interested in the •change because of the improved standard of comfort provided. The Department will not attempt to turn to an unfair gain the monopoly which, from the nature of things, it holds in supplying the requirements of persons travelling long distances and requir- ing meals. The latter hitherto had to carry cold food, patronise the facilities offering at certain stopping-places, or go hungry. Under the new regime all travellers meet with identical treat- ment at refreshment rooms in regard both to the quality of the food supplied and to the charge made.
