Is it not because men fail to apprehend the lesson which the Psalmist learnt from the changefulness of life ? ' All things come to an end, but Thy command- ment is exceeding broad ' — that is, in modern Chris- tian language, ' Amidst all the limitations of nature there is one law which has an infinite working : it is the law of righteousness. And there is one form of life which is exempted from the general condition of decay : it i...s the life of holiness, truth, and love. ' Even the Psalmist's words imply, what Jesus and His Apostles taught with far greater fulness, not only that while man changes, God changes not, but that man may rise out of change in boundless progress, by active obedience to the commandment, that is, by living and practical communion with the divine will.
I purpose briefly to enforce and illustrate this truth : First, with reference to the lives of individuals ; Secondly, with reference to the life of communities and Churches.
