John. There is the fundamental conception of God — the Light that lighteth every man that Cometh into the world, the eternal Word dwelling in man. There we read : " I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you." " If a man love me, he will keep my words ; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him." So we arrive at that great saying of my text: " God is spirit." By this it is not meant that God is comparable to the semi-visualised conception of a phanta...sm, some unsubstantial but definite form. It means rather that the mind and intellect that works in us, the thoughts of holiness that arise in us, the aspirations we cherish, the love we feel, the law written in our hearts — all that makes the spirit and inspiration of man is to us more than the action, it is the revelation, of the Indwelling God. It is not possible to formulate this belief God's thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are His ways our ways.
