There was, indeed, some ground for gossip, though perhaps not for scandal — enough, certainly, to alarm people interested in the lady : Sterne's visits to Mrs Draper were too frequent, and Mrs Draper was so indiscreet as to visit Sterne at his lodgings in Old Bond Street and dine there with him tete-a-tete.
