Sir Harry Atkinson was another of New Zealand's great men, both as a soldier and 2)olitician. As a captain of the Taranaki Bush Rangers, he showed great personal pluck, and jn'OYod himself a commander thoroughly to be relied upon. My regi- ment, the 57th, were always glad when that corps accomp...anied them on their ex- peditions. As a politician he was eminently successful, rising to the position of Premier, which position he held for a long period.
It Avas, however, upon the Honourable Colonel Haultain that the l)runt of the war conducted bv the Colonial Government fell, and the diiTiculties he had to contend against, were exceptionally great. It was at this time the Imperial troops Avere withdrawn from the Colony, and we had solely to depend upon our Colonial Army ; and in 1808, when war broke out again, 6o COLONEL HAULTAIN corps had to l)c formed from a class of men that were not amenahlo to discipline, and who required cxcej^tionally good oUicers to control them ; and such officers ^verc hard to ohtain.
