De Varnhagen, in his paper read before the Societe de Geographic, in Paris, in 1858, rejected the idea that the letter is to be regarded as an attempted description of Ojeda's voyage, and accepting the dates, latitudes, 15 and distances as given in the letter, maintains that Ves- pucci made, in 1497, an unrecorded voyage along the coast of South, Central, and North America, circling the entire Gulf of Mexico, doubling Florida, and ex- tending into the Gulf of St.
