I went to dine, and left the house immediately afterward, in order not to lose the spectacle of the promenade. It was night ; there was no other illumination than the light of the moon ; one could not see the people's faces ; it seemed to me like being in the midst of a proces- sion of spectres, and I was seized with a feeling of melancholy.
