Infatuated and irrational under any state of na- tional circumstance...s as it would be to risk the stability or the peace of our Union upon the pas- sage of any measure of untried and conjectured advantage, how much more so would it be for you, who advocate the proviso, to insist upon its adoption by Congress at all hazards, in the very face of the California example ? There it has been quietly and willingly adopted by a community composed, in part, of a slaveholding people, and so adopted, without any enactment, intervention, or influence of Congress. Why, then, not leave this whole matter of the proviso to be disposed of in like manner by the remaining communities whom it may concern, according to their own will, and without any intervention, or influence of any kind, first or last, from this body ; We of the South, for the most part, are content with this; and why not you also, who have already profited by it in so marked a case?
