SHERMAN : DEAR SIR : With the approbation of the Mayor of this city, Lieutenant General Sheridan directs that you organize a regiment of Infantry to consist of ten companies, each company to consist of one Captain, one First and one Second Lieutenant, and sixty enlisted men to serve as guards for the protec- tion of the remaining portion of the city of Chicago, for the period of twenty days.
