I shall leave this topic with the final report made to the proper authority : — Offiob Provost-Marshal Wak DErARXMENT, 1 Washington, ^((t/(«< 26, ls63. f Hon. E. A. Stanton, Secretary of War : — Sib — I have the honor to submit the following statement in relation to certain illegal establishments in this city, and the steps taken by me for their suppression. I refer to the gambling-houses of Washington. The evils that grow lirectly out of tlie unrestrained practice of gambling are too apparent, and ave beer, too often and elotiuently described, to require more than the mere mention to awaken the indignation of all honest and true men, and call forth the most strenuous eftor1,s for their suppression. The peculiar character of the population of this city, com{)osed largely of young men renioved from the restraiuta of home, and the influences of the fiimily circle, offers inducements to the gambling fraternity by which they have thus far largely profited. There are more professional gamblers in this city to-day, than in the city of New York, and two weeks since there were more gambling-houses.
