It cannot be thought surprising that the reasonable reverence for such a volume should have degenerated into an assertion of its infallible truth. All spiritual conceptions which have become popular have suffered some kind of degradation into carnal forms. Criticism has shown that the New Testament is not to be regarded as a mechanically accurate book ; that we have scarcely any solid con- firmation from without of its own statements as to authorship ; that the history of which it is a record is curiously separate from the contemporary history of which we possess other records.
