Now, my dear children, you may re- member since you have had an under- standing, the many straits and difficul- ties the Lord hath enabled me to go through ...for these many years, though but weak, and greatly afflicted with sick- ness, and very near the grave many times, and the Lord renewed my strength 44 again, to bear many a faithful testimony for the Lord, and his blessed truth; many various straits and hardships hath the Lord my Redeemer brought me through, which when I look back and consider, I am filled with admiration, in consideration how my soul hath escaped to this very day. But this saying of Christ Jesus often comes before me, " That greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the w^orld ;" and said to his disciples, '* Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." This hath been a comfort to me many times, and I of- ten remember a saying of a faithful ser- vant and minister of Jesus Christ, whose name was Miles Halhead, when I w^as 2 1 years of age, and under great exer- cise, he stedfastly looking upon me, said, ** Dear child, if thou continue in truth, thou wilt make an honourable woman for the Lord ; for the Lord God will honour thee with his blessed testi- mony." And ten years after, in 1665, he came to my habitation, and said unto me, " My love and life is with thee, and 45 that for that blessed works' sake that is at work in thee ; the Lord God keep thee faithful, for he will require hard things of thee, that thou art not aware of; the Lord give tliee strength to perform it, and keep thee faithful to his blessed tes- timony; my prayers shall be for thee, as often as I remember thee." And soon after that, a great exercise fell upon us, we were exposed to great suffering, and the Lord had opened my mouth in a tes- timony but a little before; yet I have been concerned, for fear my friends should suffer for me; not for myself ; for I could truly say, " My heart was given up to serve the Lord, come what would come." But this was the least of our sorrow, loss of goods, beating, and hurling to and fro, and dragghig out of our meeting-liouse, and many other abuses, which the Lord made us able to go through, and sanctified unto us; and my soul blesseth the Lord, for that he account- ed us worthy to suffer for his name sake.
