Nothing is to be admitted, no matter how great the name or the skill of any author, which will give to the youth of this ideal state wrong ideas of the character of the gods, fear of death, or license in excessive indulgence of any emotion. So also as to musical modes and rhythms ; such as are simple and severe in their moral effect are alone tol- erated.
