As far back as the spring of 1869 the Prussian Chancellor became aware that Napoleon was preparing a triple alliance against him, and in the Hohenzollern candidature he descried a chance of precipitating a conflict before the scheme of his enemy was matured. The pride of France would never tolerate a member of the Prussian Royal Family on the throne of Spain, even though that Prussian was a Roman Catholic and more nearly connected by blood with the French Emperor than with the King of Prussia.
