One must remember that he is a practical surgeon as well as a laboratory student; in his active days he was an in- genious and able operator, as became the pupil of Syme, and for the greater part of his life he has been a professor of clinical surgery. Until i860, his thirty-fourth year, and it was during the last of this period that he began his bacteriologic studies in connection with anti- septic surgery.
