... are entirely reset. G. W. Carleton, New York, published the first American edition with the title 'Laus Veneris, ' using the text of the first edi- tion published by Edward Moxon & Co. , with all the errata except one on page 338. The poem 'Laus Veneris, ' which had called forth so much criticism when published separately in 1866, before the 'Poems and Ballads' was issued, is placed first in the book, to which it gave the title, instead of third as in the London edition.
Swinburne wrote on November 21, 1866, 'I have gone through five editions in as many days in America; a sterile success which brings much clamour and no profit with it.
