It is precluded from entering the larynx. - It will be observed that the superior aperture of the larynx being protected by its being brought forwards under the base of the tongue, the lowering of the epiglottis over it is to a certain extent unnecessary. The contracted muscles now relax. The pharynx immediately resuming its previous posi- tion, the morsel of food is quickly carried downwards towards the oesophagus ; it is also hurried on by the action of the constrictors of the pharynx which contract be- hind it.
Third Act - The food is carried through the oesophagus by tfbKperistaltic action of the latter.
