But as fast as he cut off one head, two sprang up in its place. Hercules then requested his friend lolaus to supply him with lighted brands from the neighbouring woods. These he applied to the roots of the hydra's head, and succeeded in destroying it. He then dipped his arrows in the gall of the monster, so that every wound which he afterwards gave was incurable.
